don Marsh V is an acoustic jazz quintet founded by pianist Wouter Van den Broeck, bringing together five musicians from the Belgian jazz scene, each with a strong individual voice. Saxophonist Warre Van de Putte combines a focused approach with a strongly projected sound and a sensitive, agile improvisational style, while Matthias De Waele (drums) and Janos Bruneel (bass) provide a rhythm section that is both flexible and grounded. Trumpeter Jean-Paul Estievenart adds contrast and unpredictability, giving the band its distinctive edge.
'Marshland' - the band's debut album- centres around an extended four-movement work inspired by the classical sonata form. Recurring motifs and harmonic links connect the movements, while improvisation remains at the core of the music.
Alongside this larger structure, the album features compositions by Janos Bruneel, as well as a number of swinging pieces that ground the music in the jazz tradition. The result is acoustic jazz that balances form, freedom and groove.
The second album 'IANUA' will be released in June 2026. The title refers to the Latin word for “gate” and to Janus, the Roman god with two faces — an image that resonates with a central idea in Van den Broeck’s compositions: melodies that evolve and transform throughout a piece, as if stepping through a gate into another musical dimension. While continuing to explore form and development, the music remains grounded in the essential elements of jazz — swing, groove, and spontaneous interaction.
